Toast, at $1.49, is the cheapest thing on the list. The two group bundles top it out at $19.99. Everything else, sandwiches, wraps, sides and boxes, sits between those two numbers.

Four separate items land on the exact same $3.99: the Egg & Cheese Breakfast Sandwich, both wraps, and the Omelette Bites. Price won't help you pick between those four, since it's identical either way.

This table sticks to what Tim Hortons files under Breakfast, plus the coffee, combo and boxes that pair with it. Bagels, muffins, donuts and Timbits are on the counter at the same hour, but they're not exclusive to the morning, so I've left them out of a breakfast-specific price count.

Tim Hortons also runs a Breakfast Combo through its value menu: a sandwich, a Hashbrown and a coffee for $6.99. Put another way: choose the Bacon & Egg Wrap over the Bacon Breakfast Sandwich and you pay $3.99 instead of $4.49. The same fifty-cent gap holds for sausage, $3.99 for the wrap against $4.49 for the sandwich. Order two wraps instead of two matching sandwiches and you keep a dollar in your pocket: $7.98 versus $8.98.

They're not the cheapest handheld item on the whole menu. That's still the Simply Sausage Sandwich at $2.99. But among the options built around egg and meat, the wraps are the better buy. Add a small coffee and either wrap comes to $5.58. Add a medium instead and it's $5.82, the same total as pairing that coffee with the Egg & Cheese Breakfast Sandwich.

What a breakfast sandwich and a coffee actually costs

Original Blend is Tim Hortons' base coffee: $1.59 small, $1.83 medium, $2.07 large, $2.35 extra large. Dark Roast and Decaf are priced identically at every size, so the numbers below hold if you order either one instead, double-double or black.

Each size step costs a little more than the last. Small to medium adds $0.24. Medium to large adds another $0.24. Large to extra large adds $0.28, the only step where the jump gets wider instead of staying flat.

Pair a sandwich with a medium coffee and here's what breakfast actually runs:

The coffee upgrade often moves your total more than the sandwich choice does. Swap that Original Blend for a medium Latte at $3.69 and the Egg & Cheese pairing jumps from $5.82 to $7.68, a $1.86 jump on its own, more than three times the fifty-cent gap between a wrap and its matching sandwich. Go cold instead of hot and a small Iced Coffee is $2.19, sixty cents more than a small hot Original Blend, which pushes that same sandwich to $6.18.

Push Original Blend all the way to extra large, $2.35, and the Egg & Cheese pairing tops out at $6.34. That's the ceiling for that sandwich on the base coffee. Anything higher means you've switched to a specialty drink like the Latte, not a bigger cup of the same one.

Are the breakfast bundles and boxes worth it?

Start with the boxes. The Scrambled Egg Loaded Box is $5.59, about ten cents more than the Farmer's or Double Stacked Breakfast Sandwich. What I can do is the math around them.

Split two ways, $9.99 comes to about $5.00 a person. Split across the 4 to 6 bundle, that's about $5.00 a person at four, or about $3.33 a person if it stretches to six. For a lower bound, a single Egg & Cheese Breakfast Sandwich and a small coffee already costs $5.58 bought separately, before a Hashbrown enters the picture, so if each bundle seat gets even a sandwich and a coffee, the bundle is priced under that. For an upper bound, two Farmer's Breakfast Sandwiches alone, no drinks included, already cost $10.98, more than the $9.99 bundle charges for two people with presumably a drink each too. Somewhere between those two numbers, the bundle earns its price. I'd ask what's actually in the box before assuming either way.

The cheapest way to eat breakfast at Tim Hortons

The bare minimum is Toast and a small coffee: $1.49 plus $1.59 is $3.08. That's food and a hot drink, though not much of either.

For something closer to an actual breakfast, the Simply Sausage Sandwich at $2.99 plus a small coffee at $1.59 comes to $4.58, the cheapest sandwich-and-coffee pairing on the menu. Add a Hashbrown for $1.99 and the total is $6.57.

That last number is worth sitting with, because it's forty-two cents under the $6.99 Breakfast Combo, which bundles a sandwich, a Hashbrown and a coffee for one set price. Build the same three categories yourself using the cheapest option in each and you undercut the combo. Tim Hortons most likely puts a bigger sandwich or a larger coffee into that combo to make up the difference, but matched against the cheapest items in each category, the DIY version wins.
