Selects is the widest band on the menu by a good margin, $11.40 from floor to ceiling. That's the Double-Stacked Smoked Meat doing the work at the top: it's the only named item that clears $19, and it sits in the same category as a $7.83 small Meatball sub. Everywhere else on the sub list, the spread between a category's cheapest and priciest entry is closer to $5.

Availability varies by restaurant, especially for salads and the melts, so don't count on every item being on the board at every location.

Sub sizes: what small versus large actually costs

The cleanest same-item size comparison on this menu is the Sub of the Day board, and it's remarkably consistent: every featured sandwich, on every day of the week, costs $6.59 small or $9.59 large. That's a flat $3.00 to upsize, which works out to 45.5 percent more than the small price, or put the other way, the small is 68.7 percent of the large.

I can't tell you the cost per inch, because Mr. Sub's public pricing doesn't state how much bigger a large actually is next to a small. What I can say is that the upsize cost doesn't move depending on which sub you pick. A Meatball large costs the same $3.00 premium as a Louisiana Pepper Chicken large. That fixed step is the useful number here: you know exactly what upsizing costs before you get to the counter, which isn't true of the wider category ranges above, where a $5-plus spread mixes different sandwiches and different sizes together.

Against the rest of the menu, subs cover the widest price range of anything Mr. Sub sells, $6.71 to $19.23. Wraps cluster tightly in a narrow $9.30 to $10.74 band, sitting above every classic deli sub but below most of the premium and Selects lineup. Salads and the Italian Melt are the cheapest non-sub category, running $7.27 to $8.95, roughly level with a small classic deli sub. If you want the lowest price point on the savoury side of the menu that isn't a sub, a salad is it.

Combos and daily specials, tested against buying the parts

Mr. Sub's combo isn't one fixed price. It's a sub plus a drink and a side, and the source pricing I have says that combination usually adds about $3.00 to $3.50 to the sandwich price on its own. That means a combo built around the $6.71 Classic deli floor runs $9.71 to $10.21, and a combo built around the $19.23 Double-Stacked Smoked Meat would run $22.23 to $22.73.

The Sub of the Day is the more interesting deal, and it's a real one. Every day's featured sub, at the small size, undercuts the low end of its own category's regular price range:

Every single day, the special beats the cheapest listed price in its own category, by $1.24 at the low end and by $2.41 on Wednesday. Since the combo's $3.00 to $3.50 upcharge is a flat add-on, that gap carries straight through: turning a Sub of the Day into a combo ($9.59 to $10.09) still costs less than a regular combo built from the same category's floor price ($10.83 to $12.45, depending on the day). Wednesday is the best day to do this, saving $2.41 to $2.86 over a regular Louisiana Pepper Chicken combo.

Where the combo math doesn't clearly win is at the very bottom of the menu. Assembling a Classic deli sub, a cookie and a canned drink yourself costs about the same as letting the counter apply the standard combo upcharge to that same sub, within the range of what "$3.00 to $3.50" can mean location to location. I've worked through that comparison below.

Is Mr. Sub the same as Mr. Submarine?

Yes. Mr. Sub used to be called Mr. Submarine, and the chain shortened the name at some point along the way. It's the same stores, the same franchise system, and the same menu you'll find in the tables above. If you grew up ordering from Mr. Submarine and went looking for it under that name, you didn't miss a closure or a rebrand under new ownership. It's still here, just under a shorter sign.

Opening hours

Mr. Sub doesn't run one schedule chainwide. Hours are set location by location, and the gap between locations can be large. A few examples from the official store locator:

• 3330 17 Ave SE, Calgary, Alberta (AB): Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The lesson is simple: check the specific store before you go. The official location finder lets you search by city or address and shows hours for that exact restaurant, which is worth doing given how much the schedule swings even within Calgary alone.

The cheapest full meal

The cheapest full meal I can build from Mr. Sub's own published numbers is $9.91: a $6.71 Classic deli sub (Assorted, Ham, Pizza or Veggie & Cheese at its smallest size), a $1.14 cookie, and a $2.06 canned soft drink or can of Bubly.

That figure sits inside the $9.71 to $10.21 range I get from applying the standard combo upcharge to the same $6.71 sub. In other words, at the bottom of the menu, there's no clear winner between building the meal yourself and asking for the combo. You might save 20 cents assembling it item by item, or you might pay 30 cents more, depending on where in the $3.00 to $3.50 band a given location sets its combo price. The daily special deal further up the page is the one with a confirmed, consistent saving; this one is closer to a wash.

Value analysis: the best and worst dollars on this menu

Mr. Sub publishes no calorie counts and no sandwich dimensions, so value here is measured on the two things the menu does fix: the upsize step and the Sub of the Day.

The best value on the menu is Wednesday. The Sub of the Day table above shows every day's featured sub undercutting the floor of its own category, by $1.24 at the least and by $2.41 on Wednesday, when a Louisiana Pepper Chicken that otherwise starts at $9.00 costs $6.59. Regional price variance: what the same order costs across Canada

Mr. Sub does not publish a single national price list, which this page says at the top and which matters more here than at most chains: the ranges in the category tables are partly size and partly location, and the source does not separate them. The pre-tax layer therefore moves with the address, driven by rent, wages and local competition rather than by tax. The only measured example of that spread on this site is at Kelsey's, where one item runs $20.99 in Ottawa and $23.99 in Niagara Falls — 14.3% apart inside one province, with no tax difference between the two restaurants at all.

The tax layer can be stated exactly:

Nothing Mr. Sub sells as a sandwich clears Ontario's small-order tax break. Ontario rebates the 8% provincial portion of the HST on qualifying prepared food and beverages where the transaction total is $4.00 or less, so small orders pay 5% rather than 13%. The cheapest sub on the menu is $6.71, well above the line, so an Ontario customer pays 13% on every sandwich here, every time. The only items that could qualify are the cookies and canned drinks bought on their own — and adding one to a sub makes no difference, since the sub has already put the transaction over $4.00. One consequence worth pricing: the flat $3.00 upsize costs $3.39 in Ontario once HST is applied to it, and $3.15 in a GST-only province. Provinces outside the HST group tax restaurant food differently again, and I have not verified their current treatment item by item, so the 5% column above is the floor rather than a claim about any particular province.

Delivery markup: counter price against app price

I have no verified Mr. Sub delivery prices and will not publish a markup I have not measured. The two Canadian markups that have been measured are a flat 20.0% at Kelsey's, confirmed on five items, and a flat $1.40 per single-serving item at Swiss Chalet, which publishes both prices itself. Applied to Mr. Sub's real prices:

Mr. Sub sits almost exactly on the crossover point between the two models. The small Sub of the Day at $6.59 comes out within eight cents either way, which makes this the one menu on this site where it genuinely does not matter which pricing model a delivery platform uses — at the bottom of the range. Above about $7.00 the flat fee pulls ahead, and on the Double-Stacked Smoked Meat it is $2.45 cheaper than a percentage would be.

There is one Mr. Sub-specific consequence. The Sub of the Day saving is $1.24 to $2.41, and a delivery surcharge under either model is larger than that on a small sub. Delivery erases the best deal on this menu, which is an argument for collecting the Wednesday special rather than having it brought to you. The restaurant sets the in-app price, not the platform, so SkipTheDishes, Uber Eats and DoorDash listings for the same restaurant usually start from the same marked-up list and diverge in the fee stack instead.
