Free birthday food in Canada: the one offer with published terms

Verified August 6, 2026Updated September 2, 2026CAD, before taxGuide

Most Canadian birthday freebies have moved inside loyalty apps, which means the offer, the qualifying window and the strings attached now change whenever the marketing calendar does. Lists of twenty chains with exact retail values are easy to write and almost impossible to keep true.

One offer is different, because the chain publishes its terms in full and they are unusually specific.

Denny's Canada gives you a free Build Your Own Grand Slam on your birthday. No app, no advance registration, no minimum purchase. You show a valid piece of photo identification at the table and the meal is free.

The terms are where the useful detail is, and they are the part every roundup leaves out:

  • Your actual birthday only. Not the week, not the month.
  • Valid photo ID required at the time of redemption.
  • Dine-in only.
  • No menu substitutions on the offer.
  • Cannot be combined with any other offer or promotion.
  • Taxes and gratuity are extra. The food is free; the bill is not zero.
  • Not valid at Denny's Brampton, Dundas (Toronto) or Nepean locations.

That last line is the kind of thing worth knowing before you drive somewhere. Three named Canadian restaurants do not participate.

What I have not verified

The rest of the Canadian birthday landscape runs through apps, and I have not confirmed the current terms of those programmes against the chains themselves. So there is no master table of twenty offers with retail values on this page.

That is not a claim they do not exist. Tim Hortons, Starbucks, Boston Pizza, Mary Brown's and others have all run birthday rewards inside their loyalty programs, and several probably still are as you read this. What I cannot tell you is what today's version gives you, how far in advance you have to have joined, or whether a purchase is required, because those are exactly the details that get quietly revised.

Publishing a stale version of those terms is worse than publishing none. Someone plans a birthday around a free entrée and gets a coffee.

How to find out what you actually qualify for

The reliable method takes ten minutes and works regardless of what any list says.

  1. Register a month ahead, not on the day. Loyalty programmes commonly require your account and date of birth to have been on file for some period before your birthday, precisely to stop people signing up at the till. A month clears essentially any of those windows.
  2. Enter your date of birth in the profile. A registered account with no birthday on it earns you nothing.
  3. Make one small purchase. Several programmes require recent account activity, or at least one qualifying transaction, before a birthday reward triggers. A $0.35 Timbit is the cheapest way to satisfy that at Tim Hortons.
  4. Open the app on the morning itself. Rewards that appear on the day frequently expire at the end of it. Check before lunch rather than after dinner.
  5. Read the offer, not the headline. "Free birthday reward" covers everything from a full entrée to a discount requiring a $25 spend. The terms are in the app.

What a free item is worth, at verified prices

If you are deciding which one to build the day around, it helps to know what the food actually costs.

What a free item is worth, at verified prices
ItemVerified price
Mary Brown's Big Mary sandwich$8.89
Mary Brown's Big Mary combo$12.89
Boston Pizza Deluxe pizza, individual$14.49
Tim Hortons medium Original Blend coffee$1.83
Tim Hortons medium Iced Capp$4.29
Tim Hortons Farmer's Breakfast Sandwich$5.49

A free coffee is worth $1.83. A free entrée is worth five to fifteen times that. If a birthday plan involves driving between three locations to collect a coffee, a doughnut and a dessert, the fuel is probably ahead on points.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Denny's birthday Grand Slam actually free in Canada?

The food is. You get a free Build Your Own Grand Slam on your actual birthday at participating Canadian locations by showing valid photo ID, with no purchase required. Taxes and gratuity are extra, so you will still pay something, and the offer is dine-in only with no menu substitutions.

Can I use the Denny's birthday offer on another day?

No. The offer is valid on your actual date of birth as shown on your photo ID. There is no birthday week or birthday month version of it.

Are there Denny's locations where the birthday offer doesn't work?

Yes. The offer is not valid at the Brampton, Dundas (Toronto) or Nepean locations, and it applies at participating restaurants otherwise, so confirming with the specific address before you go is worth the phone call.

Do I pay tax on a free birthday meal?

At Denny's, yes — the published terms state that taxes and gratuity are extra. Treat "free entrée" as free food rather than a zero bill, and bring enough to cover tax and a tip on the full menu value.

Which apps give free food on your birthday in Canada?

Several chains run birthday rewards through their loyalty apps, but the current terms change often enough that I have not published a list here rather than publish a stale one. Register a month ahead, put your date of birth in the profile, and check the app on the day.

How far in advance do I need to sign up?

Longer than most people expect. Programmes commonly require the account and birth date to have been on file for a set period beforehand, and some require recent purchase activity. Registering a month ahead clears essentially any of those conditions.

Methodology and disclaimer

The Denny's Canada birthday offer terms above reflect the promotion as published by Denny's Canada, including the photo ID requirement, the actual-birthday restriction, dine-in only, no substitutions, taxes and gratuity extra, and the excluded Brampton, Dundas (Toronto) and Nepean locations. Menu prices come from the verified files behind this site's Mary Brown's, Boston Pizza and Tim Hortons pages, recorded August 2026. No other chain's birthday programme terms are stated here, because none have been verified; loyalty offers are revised without notice, so confirm current terms in the relevant app before planning around one.
