Kids eat free in Canada: what the deals are worth, and when to skip them

Verified August 6, 2026Updated September 2, 2026CAD, before taxGuide

Feeding a child at a Canadian sit-down restaurant costs about $10 to $13 before tax and tip, which is why "kids eat free" gets a family through the door on a Tuesday.

Two things are worth knowing before you plan an evening around one, and they point in opposite directions.

The Boston Pizza Kids Card is a genuinely good deal with terms you can read: a $5 donation buys five free kids meals worth $9.99 each, and registering the card to a MyBP account adds a sixth. Each redemption needs a $16 adult food purchase.

And at several chains, the kids' menu is the most expensive way to feed a child anyway. At A&W, a Kids Chicken Buddy Burger costs $7.29. The same Chicken Buddy Burger off the regular menu is $3.79. Ordering from the kids' section costs $3.50 more for 160 extra calories.

What I can verify, and what I can't

Weekly "kids eat free" nights are real, and they are also the most volatile promotions in casual dining. The night, the age cut-off, the minimum adult spend and whether the location participates at all are set by individual franchise operators and change without notice.

So there is no day-by-day calendar on this page. A table saying a given chain does free kids' meals on Tuesdays between 4 and 10 p.m. with a $20 minimum would be out of date somewhere in Canada before you finished reading it, and I have not verified any of those schedules against a corporate source.

What is verifiable is a published card programme with printed terms, and a set of menu prices. Those are what follows.

What you payWhat you getCondition
$5 donation to the Boston Pizza Foundation5 free Kids Meals, valued at $9.99 each$16 minimum adult food purchase per redemption

Five meals at $9.99 is $49.95 of food for a $5 donation. Register the card and it is $59.94 for the same $5.

The condition is the part to think about honestly. Each free meal requires $16 of adult food on the same bill, so the card is worth its face value only if you were going to spend $16 on yourself anyway. At Boston Pizza prices that is not a stretch — a Deluxe individual pizza is $14.49 and a medium is $28.79 — so for a family already eating there it is close to free money. As a reason to start eating there, it is a $16 commitment six times over.

Cards carry an expiry date, and the money goes to a local charity through the chain's foundation rather than to Boston Pizza, so treat it as a donation that returns food rather than a coupon book.

Check the kids' menu before you trust it

This is the part nobody checks, and at three chains on this site the verified prices are unflattering.

Check the kids' menu before you trust it
ChainKids' menu itemPriceThe same food off the regular menuDifference
A&WKids Chicken Buddy Burger$7.29Chicken Buddy Burger, $3.79+$3.50
A&WKids Buddy Burger with Cheese$7.69——
A&WKids Buddy Burger$3.89Buddy Burger, $2.99+$0.90
Wendy'sKids' 4-piece Nuggets$5.696-piece Crispy Chicken Nuggets, $3.79+$1.90, for two fewer nuggets
Wendy'sKids' Hamburger$5.09Jr. Hamburger Deluxe, $2.19+$2.90
Harvey'sJr. Burger Kids Meal$4.99Jr. Burger, $2.79+$2.20

A kids' meal is a bundle, so some of that gap is a drink, a side and sometimes a toy. But look at the Wendy's nugget line: the kids' box costs $1.90 more than a larger order of the identical nuggets. Whatever is in the box, it is not more nuggets.

The practical version: if your child will eat a regular item, price it both ways before ordering. At A&W the gap on the Chicken Buddy Burger is $3.50, which is most of a second sandwich.

The exception on this site is a cafeteria rather than a restaurant. The IKEA Canada food court prices its children's meals as everyday items rather than as a promotion, with no minimum adult purchase attached to them.

What to check before planning around a weekly deal

Since the schedules move, here is what actually determines whether the trip is worth it.

  1. Confirm with the specific location, not a listing site. Participation is per-restaurant. Phone the address you plan to visit.
  2. Ask what the adult minimum is. This is the number that decides the value, and it is usually stated as a full-price entrée rather than a dollar figure on the bill.
  3. Ask about the ratio. Most chains allow one free child per paying adult. If you are one adult with three children, that ratio is the whole promotion.
  4. Ask whether drinks are included. At some chains the free plate is the entrée only, and a juice appears on the bill.
  5. Expect dine-in only. These promotions exist to fill a dining room on a slow night, so takeout and delivery are usually excluded.
  6. Check the age cut-off. Ten and twelve are both common, and servers do enforce it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Boston Pizza Kids Card worth it?

Yes, if you were already going to eat there. A $5 donation returns five free Kids Meals worth $9.99 each, or six if you register the card to a MyBP account. Each redemption requires a $16 adult food purchase, so the value depends on whether that $16 is spending you would have done anyway.

Which chains have kids eat free nights in Canada?

Several casual dining chains run them, but the night, the minimum spend and whether a given restaurant participates are franchise decisions that change frequently. I have not verified any current schedule against a corporate source, so there is no calendar here. Call the specific location.

Is the kids' menu cheaper than the regular menu?

Often not. At A&W a Kids Chicken Buddy Burger is $7.29 against $3.79 for the same sandwich off the regular menu. At Wendy's a Kids' 4-piece Nuggets box is $5.69 while a 6-piece order of the same nuggets is $3.79. If your child will eat a regular item, check both prices.

What does a kids' meal cost in Canada?

At the chains verified here, $3.89 to $7.69 at fast food, and around $10 to $13 at casual dining — a Kelsey's Kids' Mac and Cheese is $10.99 at the restaurant's own price. Boston Pizza values its Kids Meal at $9.99 in the Kids Card terms.

Can kids eat free deals be combined with app coupons?

Generally no. Restaurant tills allow one promotion per transaction, so a free kids' meal and a digital coupon will not stack. Take whichever is worth more.

Do these deals apply to takeout or delivery?

Usually not. The promotions are designed to fill dining rooms on slow nights, so they are typically restricted to dine-in. Delivery adds its own markup on top, which the delivery markup guide covers.

Methodology and disclaimer

Kids' menu and regular menu prices come from the verified files behind this site's A&W, Wendy's, Harvey's, Kelsey's and Boston Pizza pages, recorded August 2026. Boston Pizza Kids Card terms reflect the programme as published by the chain, including the $16 minimum adult purchase and the meal value of $9.99; cards carry an expiry date, so check the current one before buying. No weekly promotional schedules, age cut-offs or adult spend minimums are published here, because none have been verified. Prices exclude sales tax and gratuity, and vary by franchise owner.
