Senior discounts at Canadian restaurants: what's real and what it's worth

Verified August 6, 2026Updated September 2, 2026CAD, before taxGuide

Search for senior discounts at Canadian restaurants and you will find directory after directory listing exact ages and exact percentages for a dozen chains, as though head office published them. Almost none of that is a corporate policy, and presenting it as one sets people up to ask for something at a counter that has no button for it.

Here is the accurate version, which is shorter and more useful.

Neither McDonald's Canada nor Tim Hortons runs a national senior discount. Both are overwhelmingly franchised, and both leave the question to the individual owner. Where a discount exists it is real, unadvertised, and applied by a cashier who will not offer it unless you ask. Where it does not exist, no amount of asking produces it, and the cut-off age is whatever the owner decided, commonly somewhere between 55 and 60.

So the honest headline is not a percentage. It is: ask at the counter, because the answer is local, and the same chain will give you a different answer four blocks away.

What a senior discount is actually worth

Since the percentages vary and the prices do not, the useful thing is to price the discount rather than list rumours about it. These use verified menu prices from this site.

What a senior discount is actually worth
What you buyPrice10% off20% off10% over 250 weekday mornings
Tim Hortons small coffee$1.59$0.16$0.32$39.75
Tim Hortons medium coffee$1.83$0.18$0.37$45.75
Tim Hortons large coffee$2.07$0.21$0.41$51.75
Tim Hortons extra large coffee$2.35$0.24$0.47$58.75
McDonald's Premium Roast Coffee$1.99$0.20$0.40$49.75

A daily coffee discount is worth $40 to $60 a year at 10%, and roughly double that at 20%. That is real money for a habit that costs nothing to ask about, and it is nowhere near the hundreds of dollars some directories imply.

Worth noting alongside it: choosing the right cup size moves more money than the discount does. A Tim Hortons extra large is 33.1 cents per 100 ml against 53.7 for a small, a 62% difference, which dwarfs a 10% discount on either. The cost per millilitre guide has that arithmetic in full.

What I could verify, and what I could not

Being explicit about this is the whole point of the page.

Verified: there is no corporate senior discount at McDonald's Canada. The chain does not operate one at a national level. Many franchised locations do offer discounted coffee to older customers, at an age the owner sets, commonly reported between 55 and 60. It is genuine, it is not advertised, and it is not guaranteed anywhere.

Verified: there is no nationwide Tim Hortons senior discount either. Tim Hortons does not run a year-round senior offer through its app or corporate program. Some restaurants apply a discount, commonly reported at 10% for customers 60 and over, at the manager's discretion.

Not verified: everything else. Directories widely list senior menus, appreciation days and fixed percentages at a range of other Canadian chains. I have not been able to confirm those against a corporate source, and I am not going to reprint them here as though I had. If you have seen one of those listings, treat it as a prompt to ask that specific restaurant, not as a policy to plan a meal around.

Partly verified, and worth knowing: Swiss Chalet runs a published CAA member partnership rather than an age-based discount. That is a different door to the same kind of saving, and unlike an unadvertised senior rate it has terms you can read before you go. If you hold a CAA membership, that is the offer to check on the Swiss Chalet menu.

How to actually get one

The mechanics matter more than the list, because the discount is applied by a person rather than by a system.

  1. Ask before you pay. Registers cannot apply a discount button after the transaction closes. Say it at the start of the order, not once the card is out: "do you do a senior coffee?" is the whole script.
  2. Order from a cashier, not a kiosk. Self-serve touchscreens almost never carry a senior option, because there is nobody to check eligibility. If you tap through the kiosk you will pay full price. Choosing "pay at counter" and asking is the workaround.
  3. Expect it to be local. The same brand, in the same city, will honour it at one location and not the next. That is not a mistake by the staff; it is how franchise pricing discretion works.
  4. Do not expect to stack it. Where a discount exists, tills generally allow one promotion per transaction, so a senior rate and an app coupon will not combine. Take whichever is worth more.
  5. Carry ID, but expect not to need it. At coffee counters, staff rarely ask. At sit-down restaurants and for membership-based offers like CAA, expect to show the card.

Frequently asked questions

Does McDonald's Canada have a senior discount?

Not as a corporate policy. McDonald's Canada does not operate a national senior discount, but many individually owned locations offer discounted coffee to older customers. The qualifying age is set by the owner and is commonly reported somewhere between 55 and 60. You have to ask at the counter.

Does Tim Hortons offer a senior discount?

Not nationally. There is no year-round senior offer in the Tims Rewards app or as a corporate program. Some restaurants apply a discount at the manager's discretion, commonly reported at 10% for customers 60 and older, and participation varies location to location.

What age counts as a senior at a Canadian restaurant?

There is no single answer, which is a symptom of these being franchise decisions rather than national policies. Reported cut-offs cluster between 55 and 65 depending on the chain and the location. Ask rather than assume you do or do not qualify.

How much is a senior coffee discount actually worth?

At 10% off a $1.83 Tim Hortons medium, eighteen cents a cup, or $45.75 over 250 working mornings. At 20% it is roughly double. It is worth asking for and it is not going to change your budget.

Can I get a senior discount on Uber Eats or DoorDash?

No. Third-party delivery platforms have no mechanism for an age-verified discount applied by a cashier, and delivery menu prices are typically higher than counter prices to begin with.

Why is there no senior button on the ordering kiosk?

Because eligibility is judged by a person. A kiosk cannot verify age, so the discount stays with the cashier. If you want it, bypass the screen.

Methodology and disclaimer

Coffee prices come from the verified menu files behind this site's Tim Hortons and McDonald's pages, recorded August 2026; the McDonald's file covers one Toronto restaurant and lists its coffee without a cup size. Discount values are calculated from those prices. Statements about the absence of national senior discount programs reflect what the chains themselves publish; franchise-level offers are by definition local and unpublished, and nothing on this page is a guarantee that any particular restaurant will honour one. Chains and franchisees change these arrangements without notice.
