Scene+ dining rewards: what points at Harvey's, Swiss Chalet and Montana's are actually worth

Verified August 6, 2026Updated September 2, 2026CAD, before taxGuide

Scene+ is one of Canada's largest loyalty programs, co-owned by Scotiabank, Cineplex, and Empire Company (Sobeys and Safeway). While most members collect points for movie tickets or grocery bills, the program features a massive dining partnership with Recipe Unlimited, Canada's largest full-service restaurant operator.

You can earn and burn Scene+ points across hundreds of restaurant dining rooms, including Harvey's, Swiss Chalet, Montana's, Kelsey's, and East Side Mario's.

The financial conversion is simple, but understanding the math reveals whether spending your points on a rotisserie chicken dinner is a smarter move than redeeming them for groceries or cinema tickets.

The baseline redemption math: 1.0 cent per point

At all Recipe Unlimited restaurants, Scene+ operates on a fixed redemption grid:

  • 500 points = $5.00 CAD discount
  • 1,000 points = $10.00 CAD discount
  • 5,000 points = $50.00 CAD discount

Every point is worth exactly 1.0 cent ($0.010 CAD) when applied toward a restaurant check.

There are no blackout dates, no tier restrictions, and no category exclusions. If your food check comes to $45.00 before tax, handing your server 4,000 Scene+ points knocks exactly $40.00 off the payable balance.

Where you can earn and spend Scene+ dining points

Recipe Unlimited manages some of Canada's most established casual dining and quick-service franchises.

The table below lists participating restaurant networks, their earning structures, and redemption acceptance channels.

Harvey's is the outlier worth noting: it is the only brand in the group with a 500-point redemption floor, so it is where a small balance becomes usable first.

The base earning problem: $3,000 for a $10 discount

Redeeming is generous. Earning at the table is not, and the two facts belong in the same sentence.

The standard rate at Recipe Unlimited restaurants is 1 Scene+ point for every $3.00 spent on food and beverages, calculated before taxes, gratuities and any service or delivery charge.

Put verified menu prices through that and the scale becomes obvious.

The effective cash-back return is 0.33%, and it does not vary. To reach the 1,000 points that buy $10 off at Swiss Chalet, Montana's or Kelsey's, you would need $3,000 of restaurant food at the base rate. Harvey's lower 500-point floor still takes $1,500.

For comparison, the fast-food loyalty apps on this site return between 2.7% and 16.5% of what you spent, covered in the Tims Rewards and MyMcDonald's comparison. Scene+ dining earning is roughly one tenth of the weakest of those.

Which leads to the only sensible conclusion about this programme: Scene+ is not a dining rewards programme that happens to have a credit card. It is a credit card rewards programme that happens to have restaurants. The card is where the points come from; the restaurant is where you spend them.

How to multiply your dining return

To make Scene+ dining rewarding, you must layer card accelerators and targeted bonus promotions:

1. Scotiabank credit card multipliers

Paying for your restaurant meal with an eligible Scotiabank credit card dramatically accelerates your points accumulation:

  • Scotiabank Gold American Express: Earns 5 Scene+ points per dollar spent at restaurants (including takeout and delivery). That increases your effective dining return from 0.33% to a remarkable 5.33% when combined with the base restaurant earn.
  • Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite: Earns 2 Scene+ points per dollar on dining (2.33% combined return).

2. Targeted Recipe Unlimited bonus offers

Scene+ and Recipe Unlimited run periodic targeted bonus offers, and because the base rate is so low, a bonus offer is worth more than months of ordinary earning. As an illustration of the scale rather than a current offer: a hypothetical "spend $40, get 500 bonus points" promotion would pay $5.00 on a $40 meal, plus the 13 base points, for an effective return of 12.8% — roughly forty times the base rate.

I have not verified any specific current promotion, so check the offers tab in the Scene+ app rather than planning around a figure from an article. The point to carry away is that on this programme, the targeted offer is not a bonus on top of the return. It is the return.

Dining vs. groceries vs. movies: which redemption wins?

Because Scene+ points can be redeemed across three major industries in Canada, comparing their relative value ensures you spend your points where they have the most purchasing power:

Dining vs. groceries vs. movies: which redemption wins?
Redemption categoryMinimum pointsDollar value receivedCents per point (CPP)Best strategy
Recipe Unlimited dining500 pts$5.00 food credit1.00 centGreat flexibility on meals
Sobeys / Safeway groceries1,000 pts$10.00 grocery credit1.00 centEssential household expense
Cineplex standard movie ticket1,250 pts$15.50 average ticket1.24 centsHighest mathematical value
Scene+ Travel portal100 pts$1.00 travel booking1.00 centSolid for flights and hotels

Redeeming points for standard Cineplex movie tickets yields the highest valuation (up to 1.24 cents per point), because a ticket retailing for $15.50 requires only 1,250 points.

However, redeeming at Harvey's or Swiss Chalet at a flat 1.0 cent per point matches the return on Sobeys groceries and travel bookings. It is a practical, cash-like redemption that directly offsets an evening dining bill.

The 4 operational rules for redeeming at restaurants

To redeem your Scene+ points without issues at the end of your meal:

  1. Tell the server before the bill is printed: At sit-down chains like Swiss Chalet and Montana's, servers must apply the loyalty discount code before printing the final check. Hand your physical card or mobile app barcode to the server when requesting the bill.
  2. Minimum 500-point increments: You cannot redeem arbitrary amounts like 632 points. Redemptions must occur in 500-point blocks ($5.00, $10.00, $15.00, etc.).
  3. Third-party delivery apps are excluded: You cannot redeem Scene+ points if you order Harvey's or Swiss Chalet through Uber Eats, SkipTheDishes, or DoorDash. You must order dine-in, phone takeout, or use the chain's official in-house app.
  4. Alcohol and tip exclusions: While Scene+ credits apply toward the total food subtotal, certain provincial liquor regulations restrict applying loyalty points directly to alcoholic beverages. Gratuities cannot be paid with points and must be charged to debit or credit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Scene+ points at Harvey's drive-thrus?

Yes. You can scan your Scene+ mobile barcode at the drive-thru payment window to redeem points in 500-point increments ($5.00 off) or to earn base points on your order.

Do Scene+ points expire?

Scene+ points will only expire if your account remains completely inactive for 24 consecutive months. Making a single purchase, earning one point, or redeeming points resets the 24-month clock across the entire balance.

Can I earn Scene+ points on Swiss Chalet delivery?

Yes, provided you order directly through the official Swiss Chalet website, mobile app, or phone order centre. Delivery orders fulfilled through third-party platforms like Uber Eats do not earn points.

What is the minimum number of Scene+ points you can redeem at dinner?

500 points, which equals a $5.00 reduction on your bill. Subsequent redemptions scale in 500-point increments ($10 for 1,000 points, $15 for 1,500 points, etc.).

Can you split payment between Scene+ points and a credit card?

Yes. You can apply your Scene+ points to cover part of the bill and pay the remaining balance using cash, debit, or credit card.

Is it worth collecting Scene+ points just by dining?

Not on its own. At 1 point per $3 of food, a $10 redemption takes $3,000 of restaurant spending, a 0.33% return. The programme becomes worthwhile when an eligible Scotiabank card is doing the earning, or when a targeted bonus offer is running.

How much do I need to spend to get $10 off?

$3,000 of food and beverages at the base rate, which earns the 1,000 points that redeem for $10 at Swiss Chalet, Montana's, Kelsey's and the other Recipe brands. At Harvey's the floor is lower: 500 points, or $1,500 of spending, redeems for $5.

Methodology and disclaimer

Earning rates, redemption floors and the participating brand list reflect the published Scene+ terms for Recipe Unlimited restaurants: 1 point per $3.00 of food and beverages before taxes, gratuities and service or delivery charges, redeeming at 500 points for $5.00 at Harvey's and 1,000 points for $10.00 at the other Recipe brands. Scotiabank card earn rates are as published by the issuer. Menu prices come from the verified files behind this site's Swiss Chalet and Harvey's pages, recorded August 2026. No current promotional bonus offer is stated here, because none has been verified; the $40 example is a labelled illustration. Programme terms change, so confirm current rates in the Scene+ app.
