Student food discounts in Canada: what the SPC card is actually worth
Verified August 6, 2026Updated September 2, 2026CAD, before taxGuide
The Student Price Card is Canada's main student discount network, and the question worth answering is not which chains accept it — that list changes every term — but whether the card earns back what it costs.
SPC membership is $11.99 a year. It is free if you hold an eligible CIBC student or youth account, which is the single most useful fact on this page: a large share of Canadian post-secondary students already qualify for it at no charge and never claim it.
At a 10% discount, $11.99 is repaid after roughly $120 of qualifying spending — about 21 Burger King small combos, or 13 Sub of the Day larges. That is a term's worth of lunches for many students and a fortnight's for others, which is why the answer to "is it worth it" is genuinely "it depends how often you eat out."
What a student discount returns on real prices
Discount percentages mean nothing without a price attached. These are verified menu prices from this site with 10% and 15% applied.
| What you buy | Price | 10% off | 15% off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burger King small combo | $5.69 | $0.57 | $0.85 |
| Mr. Sub Sub of the Day, small | $6.59 | $0.66 | $0.99 |
| McDonald's McDouble McValue Meal | $6.69 | $0.67 | $1.00 |
| Harvey's meal built from Value Picks | $8.47 | $0.85 | $1.27 |
| Mr. Sub Sub of the Day, large | $9.59 | $0.96 | $1.44 |
| Burger King Whopper medium combo | $13.19 | $1.32 | $1.98 |
A student discount on a cheap lunch is worth between fifty cents and a dollar. That is the honest scale of it.
Which is why the comparison below matters more than the percentage does. Choosing the cheaper meal beats discounting the expensive one, every time. A 10% discount on a $13.19 Whopper combo saves $1.32 and leaves you paying $11.87. An undiscounted $5.69 small combo costs less than half that. The combos under $10 guide has the full list of what is still available at that price.
The 15% that is not a restaurant
The largest student discount I can verify in Canada is at a bulk food store rather than a counter.
Bulk Barn takes 15% off for students on Wednesdays, on presentation of a valid high school, college or university student ID, at participating locations. For someone buying oats, rice, pasta, nuts, dried fruit and baking supplies, that is a discount applied to the groceries that actually stretch a student budget, rather than to a single lunch.
Fifteen percent on a $40 shop is $6.00 — more than a whole SPC card's payback in one visit, and it repeats every week.
Which restaurants accept SPC
I am not going to print a partner list. SPC's roster turns over constantly as agreements start and end, and a list that is wrong sends you to a counter to be told no in front of a queue.
The reliable method is the app itself: SPC's partner list lives inside the app and is current by definition. Check it before you plan a lunch around it, and check it again next term.
The same caution applies to individual chains' own student offers. Campus-adjacent locations of large chains do sometimes run local student promotions, set by that franchise owner rather than by head office. They are real, they are unadvertised nationally, and they are entirely local — the same chain across town will not honour them. Ask at the counter you actually use.
Making the card pay
- Check whether you already have it free. If you bank with CIBC on a student or youth account, an SPC membership is included at no cost. Claiming it takes a few minutes and is the difference between the card costing $11.99 and nothing.
- Keep the app active on your phone. Digital membership status is what cashiers scan. Screenshots and expired plastic are routinely refused.
- Order from a cashier. Like most discounts applied by a person, student rates rarely appear on self-serve kiosks. If you tap through the screen you pay full price.
- Do not count on stacking. Tills generally allow one promotion per transaction, so a student discount will not combine with an app coupon or a daily special. Take whichever is worth more, which on a promotional day is usually the special.
- Compare it against just buying the cheaper thing. Ten percent off is smaller than the gap between most menus' value tier and their flagship tier.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an SPC card cost?
$11.99 a year. It is provided free to students who hold an eligible CIBC student or youth account, which is worth checking before paying for one.
Is the SPC card worth it?
At a 10% discount it repays $11.99 after about $120 of qualifying spending, which is roughly 21 Burger King small combos. If you eat out weekly during term it pays for itself comfortably; if you cook most nights it may not. If you can get it free through a CIBC student account, the question does not arise.
Which restaurants take the SPC card in Canada?
The partner roster changes frequently enough that any list published here would mislead someone within a term. SPC's own app carries the current list, and that is the only version worth planning around.
Does Bulk Barn have a student discount?
Yes, and it is the largest one verified here: 15% off on Wednesdays with a valid high school, college or university student ID, at participating locations.
Does McDonald's have a national student discount in Canada?
No. Some individually owned locations near campuses run their own student promotions, which are set by that franchise and are not honoured elsewhere. Ask at the specific restaurant rather than assuming a chain-wide offer.
Can I stack a student discount with an app coupon?
Generally no. Restaurant tills allow one promotion per transaction. On a day with a good app offer, the coupon is usually worth more than 10%.
Do international students qualify?
Eligibility runs on enrolment rather than citizenship: a valid student ID from a recognised institution, or an active SPC membership, is what the discount is checked against.
Methodology and disclaimer
Menu prices come from the verified files behind this site's Burger King, Harvey's, Mr. Sub and McDonald's pages, recorded August 2026; discount values are calculated from those prices. SPC membership pricing and the CIBC student account inclusion reflect the programme as published. The Bulk Barn student discount reflects the retailer's published Wednesday student offer at participating locations. No SPC partner list or chain-specific student discount percentages are published here, because those change frequently and none have been verified against a current corporate source. Prices exclude sales tax.
