Feeding four for under $40 at Canadian chains

Verified August 6, 2026Updated September 4, 2026CAD, before taxGuide

Eleven things Froqel has priced will feed four people for under $40 in Ontario, tax included. The cheapest costs $6.78. The one that misses by the smallest margin is the McDonald's Value Bundle Meal, which is $38.39 on the menu — under budget — and $43.38 at the till.

That gap is the whole reason this page exists. A $40 budget is a till budget, and restaurant menus are not priced at the till.

What this compares, and what it doesn't

Every figure here comes from a verified menu file on this site. Where a chain sells a bundle that names how many people it serves, I use the chain's own number. Where it doesn't, I say how the order was built.

Three limits worth stating.

"Serves four" is the chain's claim, not mine. Swiss Chalet says a Family Pak feeds about four; McDonald's says its Value Bundle Meal serves four. I have not weighed the food. Appetites vary and a household with two teenagers should read every row here sceptically.

These are not equivalent meals. A Costco hot dog is not a rotisserie chicken dinner, and ranking them by cost per head says nothing about which one you want. The ranking answers one question: what is the least money that puts a meal in front of four people at a chain Froqel has checked.

Alcohol, tips and delivery are excluded. Tips are covered in what a tip actually costs; delivery markups are in the delivery app markup guide. Both would push several of these rows over budget on their own.

Eleven rows clear $40 after tax. The twelfth does not, and it is worth its own line.

The five-cent finish, and the one that misses

The McDonald's Breakfast Bundle for 4 is the last order on this list that fits. At $35.35 pre-tax it comes to $39.95 in Ontario — five cents under budget, and $9.99 a head, which is a cent under ten dollars a person. Nothing else Froqel has priced lands that close to a round number by accident.

The next three up the ladder all look affordable on a menu and are not:

The five-cent finish, and the one that misses
OrderMenu priceOntario totalOver $40 by
McDonald's Value Bundle Meal, serves 4$38.39$43.38$3.38
Mary Brown's 9 Piece Feast$40.69$45.98$5.98
McDonald's Late Night Bundle, serves 4$40.99$46.32$6.32

The McDonald's Value Bundle Meal is the trap on this whole page. It is $1.61 under budget on the board and $3.38 over it at the till. In a province with no provincial sales tax the same bundle comes to $40.31 — still over, but by thirty-one cents rather than three and a half dollars.

The arithmetic is easy to carry: in Ontario, $40 at the till is $35.40 on the menu. Anything priced above that misses, whatever the board says.

Where the money actually goes

Three patterns run through the ranking, and none of them is "bigger chains are cheaper".

The food courts win outright, and it is not close. The two cheapest rows are both Costco, and the hot dog combo at $1.50 a head costs less per person than a single small coffee at any chain in the coffee price index. Costco's food court is priced as a membership perk rather than as a restaurant, and it shows: an 18-inch pizza feeding four costs less than one Boston Pizza starter.

Breakfast is the cheapest hour to feed a family. Two of the eleven rows are breakfast bundles, and both undercut their own chain's dinner options. The Tim Hortons Classic Breakfast Bundle for 4 to 6 at $19.99 is the cheapest branded bundle on the list at $5.00 a head, and the McDonald's Breakfast Bundle at $8.84 a head beats that chain's own Family Bundle for three at $10.50 a head. As the McDonald's page puts it, the breakfast bundle is the best per-person deal on a menu it is not even served alongside.

Bundling beats buying the parts, sometimes by a fifth. Swiss Chalet is the clearest case: a Family Pak at $24.99 against four Quarter Chicken Dinners at $31.96 saves $6.97, or 21.8%, and the Chicken & Ribs Family Pak saves $6.49 against buying a Family Pak and a Half Rack separately. Both land under $40 taxed. Ordering four individual dinners at that restaurant does not.

What $40 does not buy

Three of the sit-down chains on this site cannot feed four for $40 under any combination Froqel has priced, and saying so is as useful as the ranking.

St. Louis Bar & GrillWings & Pizza Combo for 4, $63.19$15.80
Montana'sSouthern BBQ combo for four, $71.99$18.00
Kelsey'sFamily bundles run $20.39 to $63.59not published per head

Montana's four-person combo at $18.00 a head is still the best per-person rate on its own menu — its four combos for two all cost $53.94, which is $26.97 a head. The gap between feeding four and feeding two at the same restaurant is $8.97 per person, in favour of the larger table.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to feed a family of four at a Canadian restaurant chain?

Of the prices Froqel has verified, four hot dog and drink combos at a Costco food court, $6.00 in total or $1.50 a head. The cheapest branded restaurant bundle is the Tim Hortons Classic Breakfast Bundle for 4 to 6 at $19.99, $5.00 a head.

Can you feed four people for $40 at McDonald's in Canada?

Only on the breakfast bundle. The Breakfast Bundle for 4 is $35.35, which comes to $39.95 with Ontario HST. The Value Bundle Meal at $38.39 comes to $43.38 and the Late Night Bundle at $40.99 comes to $46.32, so both miss a $40 till budget.

Is a Swiss Chalet Family Pak worth it?

Yes, on the arithmetic. At $24.99 it works out to $6.25 a head, and buying four Quarter Chicken Dinners separately costs $31.96 — so the pak saves $6.97, or 21.8%, for what the chain describes as the same food.

How much tax is added to a family meal in Canada?

It depends on the province. Ontario adds 13% HST, so a $38.39 bundle becomes $43.38. Alberta and the territories add the 5% GST only, making the same bundle $40.31. Ontario's small-order rebate does not help here: it applies only where the transaction total is $4.00 or less.

What does $40 on the menu actually buy at the till in Ontario?

Less than you think. A $40 till budget is $35.40 on the menu once 13% HST is applied. Any bundle priced above $35.40 will miss a $40 budget in Ontario, however affordable the board looks.

Are kids' menus cheaper than a family bundle?

Usually not, per person. Boston Pizza's $5 Kids Card and the A&W kids pricing comparison work through where kids' pricing pays off and where it costs more than the regular menu, which happens more often than parents expect.

Methodology and disclaimer

Prices come from the verified menu files behind this site's Costco, IKEA Canada, Swiss Chalet, Tim Hortons, Tim Hortons breakfast, McDonald's, Boston Pizza, Mary Brown's, Montana's, St. Louis Bar & Grill and Kelsey's pages, recorded August 2026. The McDonald's figures come from a single Toronto restaurant; McDonald's Canada does not publish a national price list. Serving counts are the chains' own claims where a bundle states one, and are noted as constructed orders where the order was assembled from separate line items.

Per-head figures and all totals are arithmetic done here. Tax calculations use Ontario's 13% HST and the 5% GST for Alberta and the territories; provinces outside the HST group treat restaurant food differently and are not modelled. Prices vary by franchise and by province, tips and delivery are excluded, and provincial rates change. This page explains published tax rules and is not tax advice.
